Talk to Me Tuesday #2

This week's question: Do you prefer series or stand-alone novels and why?

I've loved many series in my time. Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, Mortal Instruments... the list is long. But I do find myself annoyed by what feels like an overwhelming number of series beginnings I've come across lately. It feels like nobody is writing/publishing stand-alone fantasy anymore, and sometimes it is definitely frustrating. Sometimes I really want a resolution, people! I want couples to get together, I want problems to be solved. Reading book after book without firm conclusions can drive a person mad.

So while I love a good series, I think for this Tuesday I will vote stand-alone novels. Recommend your favorites in the comments!

  1. Hear, hear! I love a good series, but I want closure! I want to feel like I've accomplished something with the characters when I read a book. I don't want to feel like I've been strung along and left out to dry after reading a book!

    Great answer, Karen! :)

  3. It drives me mad being in the middle of so many series too! I just don't have a good enough memory to keep up with all those half-finished plots and then try to pick them up again a year (or more!) later.

I highly recommend Vivian Vande Velde. Not only are her books standalones, but they also tend to be short. She can really teach these series authors a thing or two about writing a short book that can still pack an emotional punch and contain a complex plot.
